Recruitment
FOC relies primarily on a network of international contacts to help screen and recruit suitable professionals. Anyone associated with FOC, either studying or working in China, is known as an FOC Associate. Such people may be:
- Involved in FOC-related programmes
- Working in FOC-negotiated jobs
- Working in non-FOC-negotiated jobs (e.g. multinationals, NGO’s)
- Visiting China on short-term language study or teaching assignments, known as Short Term Educational Programmes (STEP).
In our screening process, FOC examines not only the academic qualifications and professionalism of a prospective teacher or other professional, but also their cultural sensitivity and willingness to accept conditions that may be simpler than would be expected in the foreign expert's home country. In order to assist the teachers or other professionals to adapt to life in China, FOC provides an orientation to all teachers and experts who are recruited to work at Chinese educational institutions. Continued monitoring of their adjustment to life in China and their performance as teachers is also one of our priorities.
FOC Associates normally have a minimum commitment of one year. Exceptions to this would be STEP programme participants, some research students on special placements, and occasionally a six-month teaching appointment.
